What’s in A Name?
It can be hard to name characters. With so many stories, I have used more names that you might think. It’s not just the two or three main characters, it’s all the side characters, the places, the random passer-by who gets greeted by name.
I keep a spreadsheet of main character names so I don’t repeat, but you’ll find I often have side characters with the same names because I’ll throw in my friends’ names often. There are a lot of seen only once characters named Sarah, Michelle, or Jonathan.
Some of the more unique names I’ve used include Astrid, Ginger, Jasper, and Levan. It’s important to me that names are generally easy to decipher. I do look up the meaning of every prominent name to make sure the meaning fits the character as well.
What are your thoughts on character names? Do you think they’re important?
Summer is in full swing here and the temperatures are starting to reflect that! Whew! I’m preparing to head to Charleston this weekend for the Books in Charleston event. I hope I see you there!
Otherwise, I’m spending as much time as I can with my kids and working. I have a few clients who’s books I’m working on.
Have a wonderful week!
